In order to get other apps, the user had to connect the MessagePad to their Mac. There was no App store then, so the MessagePad shipped with basic productivity apps. The $699 starting price was way too high for a product that felt like a Beta product. It didn’t live up to expectations and didn’t live up to Apple’s reputation to deliver high-quality products. Well, for one thing, the Newton MessagePad’s handwriting recognition software was just awful. This is quite advanced for a handheld product in 1993. It had 640KB of RAM, and a 1-bit, 336-by-240-pixel LCD. According to MacWorld, the original Newton MessagePad was a one pound, 7.25-by-4.50-by-0.75-inch device with a 32-bit ARM 610 CPU running at 20MHz. It was really the first PDA - long before Palm devices, long before the Pocket PC, and way long before the iPhone.Īs Time notes, the MessagePad received generally good reviews when finally arriving in stores on August 2, 1993.
